Natalia Garea-Garcia and Anne Welsh Linked open bibliographic data

Cataloguing have a history in the manual catalogue, which would be quite at home in today's venue. These had a limited set of links.

MARC

Summary of the familiar history of the development of structured Cataloguing codes and formats in LIS. MARC fields based on cards. Printing and dissemination more important motivation than information retrieval. The structure of the new format did not take advantage of the capacities of the computer to link data.

FRBR

In 1998, FRBR: a new model for relationships was published by IFLA. Not until 2005 does this model have an influence on AACR which becomes RDA.

BIBFRAME and RDF

LOC uses a simplified model of Work and Instance as the basis for BIBFRAME for better harmonisation with RDF.

This is no longer a record per se but a collection of data that describes an item.

UCL BIBFRAME Project

UCL project is just one on the BIBFRAME implementation register.

The aim of this project is to develop a BIBFRAME dataset as an Open Educational Resource, which will help students learn the new standard in an interactive way, and in the same time become familiar with state-of-the art web technologies. An important aspect of the project is working with students from the MA LIS programme to develop and evaluate the resource.

Demonstration of MARC to BIBFRAME Transformation Service

Fuseki is the SPARQL server being used to query the transformed data.

What do Cataloguers Need to Know?

  • the future for library cataloguing is linked data
  • BIBFRAME a will replace MARC
  • BIBFRAME a not envisaged as an entry time but not sure we believe LOC about the level of BIBFRAME/RDF a knowledge cataloguers will need
  • at this stage it's about conceptual models
  • explore RDF and BIBFRAME a enough to understand the basic model and structure of a triple
  • keep up with JSC For RDA
  • relax! It took 8 years for RDA to cross the chasm. Linked data still quite academic and with early adopters.
